Gaye has nearly 40 years of executive experience including a 23-year career in mining and resources where she held a range of senior executive roles with BHP in strategy, planning, accounting, finance, commercial and treasury management. She was a BHP nominated director on domestic and international mining and manufacturing joint venture boards.
Gaye’s executive career also included 15 years in higher and international education where she was the Chief Operating Officer (formerly Executive Director, Finance and Resources and Chief Financial Officer) at the University of Western Australia (UWA) for 12 years. A key achievement in this role was the active management and development of the investments and property portfolio including the successful development of UWA College Row with the provision of over 1000 new purpose-built student dwellings. Prior to joining UWA, Gaye was Pro-Vice Chancellor Resources and CFO at Murdoch University for 3 years.
In 2016, Gaye was appointed to the position of Executive Director, Perth Education City, a major strategic initiative of the Western Australian Higher Education Council working on behalf of all five universities in WA and the WA State Minister for Education. This role resulted in attracting private sector investment in approximately 2000 purpose-built student dwellings in the Perth CBD.
From 2018 to 2020, Gaye was appointed the Deputy Chair Commissioner at the City of Perth, with the objective to restore good governance and community confidence in the City. Gaye played a major role in the transformation of the City with portfolio responsibilities including economic activation, culture and the arts, community services, homelessness and education. Gaye was instrumental in the formulation of the Perth City Deal which resulted in a commitment from Commonwealth, State and Local Governments to a significant investment in a greater University presence in the Perth CBD, including a new Edith Cowan University City campus. Gaye represented the City of Perth on the national body of the Council of Capital City Lord Mayors. In this role she contributed to supporting ending homelessness as a national priority.
